In our own backyard lies one of the most unique ecosystems in the world. The Everglades is a vast and unique subtropical wetland known for its extensive shallow water bodies and slow-moving water. It is distinguished by its many diverse habitats such as sawgrass marshes, mangrove forests, pine rocklands, and cypress swamps, providing critical habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna. The Everglades also play a crucial role in the natural water purification process, aquifer recharge, and flood control and is as critical to man as it is to other inhabitants. As urban sprawl approaches the edges of this special ecosystem, conflict between man and animals increases. The Sawgrass Nature Center and Wildlife Hospital’s mission is to mitigate these conflicts by educating over 160,000 people through our education programs, visitation to our center, outreach through community events, and our social media reach. Additionally, over 70 animals call the Sawgrass Nature Center a forever home and over 1200 are admitted each year for rehabilitative care with the ultimate goal of being released back into their natural home.
